I have engraved you on the palms of my hands, Isaiah 49.16. In the right hand of Him that sat on the throne a scroll...I saw THE LAMB OPEN! O my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up, Ezekiel 37.11f.

Levinas and Deutermony 25
Interpretations of Talmud, and interpretations further involving Deuteronomy 25.2-3, acceptance of flogging to make atonement for a punishment dictated by celestial tribunal, or how flogging can be intervened in a domain that exceeds man, as in Psalm 82. Submission to the flogging is an act of justice impartially given without the spirit of violence, a fraternal act proceeding from a responsibility for others, guardian of others, but forgiveness is not free, but "always at the expense of the innocence" (104), free forgiveness only given if the judge personally assumes the cost. Hence the perfect action of Jesus the innocent grants forgiveness is paid for my himself. In the place where "earthly punishment reduces celestial punishment, the judge, the ministers must themselves be righteous (106). In Deut. 25 the less than 40 stripes succeeds with the ox that tread the corn. But then right away to Onan, Tamar and Judah, and Ruth uncovering Boaz' feet, and the duty of a brother to raise an heir and if he will not the wife may loose his shoe and spit in his face. See Heiser Reversing Hermon, 75f. But Deut 25 is not done and continues with honest weights and measures and prohibits dishonesty with Amalek who picked off the hindermost weakest in the Exodus thus his memory should be blotted out and that is not to be forgot. Five bites of Deut 25.
