What ifs force the character of Richard II.
What if Bolingbroke had not accused Mowbray or Richard II had not attached his estates after his father died? Events show that Bolingbroke was a traitor as he was accused.
What if the king had not prevented their fight to the death, virtue winning? But Bolingbroke was a traitor, not Mowbray.
What if Richard, who was politic in person, his policy hidden behind, did not scheme to attach estates to pay for the wars in Ireland.
All the pathos of Richard's deposing stems from these, but his pathos is the thing. The what ifs and the character-driven compulsive states exist to show the patios of assassination.
What if I had not written the FB post? A. had not defriended me. We would still maintain superficial relations. He would not have disowned his name. But he did and he has, so the force of character will out, not what if things had been different. No matter what things are, character is what it is and will out in either major or minor key. Your life is a function of your life.
